For the Graduate Certificate in Energy and Sustainability Engineering in connection with a Master of Science or PhD degree, students must complete at least 6 hours credit from one of the subcategories in the 10 main categories listed below and at least 3 hours credit from a subcategory in a different one of these 10 main categories:

- Chemistry, Chemical & Materials Engineering
- Electrical Energy Conversion, Transmission & Distribution
- Energy Markets, Reliability, Safety & Security
- Environmental Engineering for Energy Applications
- Geologic Energy Resources
- Nuclear Power Generation
- Solar Energy & Climate Change
- Thermal Energy Systems & Combustion Engines
- Wind Energy
